Norton Internet Security 2010 (NIS) is the
latest version of Symantec’s internet security suite for
home users. NIS works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and
Windows and provides protection from viruses, rootkits,
bots, spam and more. Read on to find out how well it works

Installation and Setup
Download, installation and setup are all exceptionally easy.
Long gone are the days when installing an antivirus product
took an age and required one or more reboots. NIS installs
in under a minute and you do not need to restart your PC
even once. Zero configuration is required- NIS will work
right out of the box and there is no need to alter the
default settings unless you wish to do so.

Free Trial Version Limitations
The trial version of NIS has no limitations and is fully
functional for 30 days. But note that you need to provide
credit or debit card information in order to be able to

 User Interface
NIS had a modern interface that is both clean and intuitive.
The main screen provides an overview of the current security
status of your PC as well as providing easy access to the
program’s options and features. The interface has been well
designed throughout and, despite the program’s abundance of
features, it’s easy to find exactly what you are looking
for.
Features
As mentioned above, NIS has an abundance of features. As you
would expect from a security suite, NIS offers protection
from viruses, rootkits, bots, spyware and a host of other
internet security threats. The program detects malware using
a combination of signature-based and behavior-based
technologies and its real-time, on-demand and scheduled
scans are all customizable.
In many security suites, spam filtering and parental
controls are the weak – or sometimes missing – link. They
are either not present at all or, if they are present, they
do not work very well. In NIS, however, both are excellent.
The spam filter has been radically overhauled since NIS 2009
and now uses Symantec’s corporate Brightmail technology. The
parental control component uses the web-based
OnlineFamily.Norton service which is completely free until
January 2010.
In addition to these features, NIS also offers a secure
password manager, phishing filter and various privacy and
performance optimizing tools.
Al-in-all, NIS is an extremely comprehensive security suite
that bundles a myriad of features and functionality into a
single easy-to-use package.
Performance
In the past, Symantec have been criticized for producing
resource-hungry products that make the average PC run at the
speed of molasses. Symantec listened to those criticisms,
redesigned the Norton product line and claim that NIS is now
the lightest and speediest security on the market. And they
may well be right.
NIS 2010 uses minimal resources and has almost zero impact
on performance.
 Symantec’s Insight technology – first introduced in the 2009
product line – helps boost performance further. Insight is a
community-intelligence feature that uses data gathered from
Norton’s enormous user base to exclude certain files from
scans, reducing both scan time and system overhead. It’s a
complex technology, but it works behind the scenes and is
completely transparent to the end user.
Help and Support
Per-incident support charges can add up to a considerable
amount, so it’s good to see Symantec offering free 24/7
support via telephone, chat and email. While you’ll probably
never need to use the service, it’s nonetheless nice to know
that you’ll be able to get support without breaking the bank
if ever you do find yourself in need of some help.
Security
NIS’s security can be summed up in one word: excellent.
The antivirus engine has long been recognized as one of the
best – if not the best – in the industry. It’s certified by
both ICSA and West Coast Labs and always performs
exceptionally well in independent tests by bodies such as AV
Comparatives (www.av-comparatives.org) and Virus Bulletin (www.virusbtn.com).
As mentioned, the spam filter and parental control are both
excellent as are the phishing filter and password manager.
