Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 Review & Screenshots |
Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 (TMIS)
is a comprehensive security solution for home users. TMIS
works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and
provides protection from viruses, spyware and other internet
security threats.
Installation and Setup
Like many other security applications, TMIS uses a setup
program: you run the setup program and that downloads and
installs the program files. This makes the process extremely
straightforward and, depending on the speed of your internet
connection, you can have TMIS downloaded and up and running
within 10 minutes.
TMIS offers a choice of a regular installation – which
installs TMIS with the settings recommended by Trend Micro –
or a custom installation.
TMIS works well with its default settings which means that
the inexperienced or technically challenged can use the
program right out-of-the-box without needing to delve into
its options.
Free Trial Version Limitations
The trail version has no limitations and TMIS remains
fully functional for the duration of the one month
evaluation period.
User Interface
TMIS has a clean and uncluttered interface with zero
wasted space. The program’s interface has been extremely
well designed and certainly makes navigation easy.
The main screen provides an overview of the security status,
subscription information and provides quick access to the
program’s scanning and update options.
Buttons on the left-hand side of the screen provide access
to options which control the operations of the virus
scanner, firewall, parental controls and various other
settings.
TMIS also adds a toolbar to Outlook, Outlook Express and
Windows Mail which provides easy access to the program’s
anti-spam features.

Features
TMIS has an impressive set of features that will protect
your computer – and the data that it holds – from viruses
and other internet security threats.
As you would expect, TMIS, like other security suites on the
market, provides real-time protection from viruses, spyware
and other internet security threats as well as customizable
on-demand and scheduled scanning options. Additionally, TMIS
can integrate with popular email and instant messenger (IM)
clients to provide an additional tier of protection and with
web browsers to provide protection against phishing scams.
TMIS also has a number of features that are not present in
many other internet security suites:
-
Prevent unauthorized changes:
enabling this option enables you to specify certain
actions for certain changes. For example, you can choose
to either be prompted for permission or to automatically
block programs from creating auto-start entries,
altering the Hosts file or altering Internet Explorer’s
settings.
-
Parental controls: the parental
control features in TMIS are more advanced than in many
other security suites. You can apply a filter based on
age (child, teen or mature teen) or apply a set of
custom rules to clock specific types of content (illegal
drugs, sex, gambling, etc.). You can also set a web
access schedule to limit the times during which your
children are able to access websites. Rules can be
applied with computer-wide or on a per-user basis.
-
Data theft protection: this enables
you to apply restrictions to the way in which certain
information can leave your computer. For example, you
can set TMIS to prevent your credit card number being
entered into all web forms except those which you have
pre-approved. Or you can set it to prevent your
telephone number, address or any other information you
choose from leaving your computer via the web, email and
instant messenger. The rules can either be applied to
all users or on a per-user basis, making it a great way
to ensure that you’re children do not give out personal
information.
Overall, TIMS has a great set of features
that will help keep you, your family and your computer safe
and secure.
Performance
Some antivirus packages and internet security suites can
have a substantial impact on the performance of your PC.
TMIS, however, is extremely light on resources and has
practically no impact on performance whatsoever, even when
used on a PC with only modest specifications (the test
machine for this review was running Windows Vista with 1 GB
of RAM).
Security
Trend Micro are one of the biggest names in the security
business and their products have long been regarded as
cutting edge. TMIS is no exception. The product has earned
West Coast Labs Checkmark certification and is packed with
state-of-the-art features that will protect your computer a
broad range of internet security threats.
Help and Support
TMIS ships with an extensive Help file and there is an
abundance of additional support material and documentation
in Trend Micro’s online support centre.
No-cost technical support is available via telephone, email
and chat (note that users of the trial version are limited
to support by email and chat).
All-in-all, TMIS is certainly a very well supported product.
Conclusion
Trend Micro Internet Security is an excellent all-in-one
solution for your security needs. The product is
competitively priced, easy-to-use and excellent protection
from a broad array of internet security threats.
